In Memory of Matthew McGee

In Memory of Matthew McGee

It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved advisor and confidante, Mr. Matthew McGee.
The heartbeat, the soul, the true spirit of the CUNY Coalition for Student with Disabilities (CCSD) was Matthew. He was one of the driving forces of CCSD. One of the most wonderful things about Matthew was that somewhere, sometime, some moment when it was really needed, he made you feel special. Long before self-esteem and empowerment were part of our everyday mental health vocabulary, he knew what to do. He nurtured us; he mentored us. He expected good things...great things...of us, and showed us the way. We could do more than we thought, reach higher than we imagined, and he showed us how. Matthew didn't give up on us. His love for us was unconditional.
He was our father, our friend, our confidante, our “Blues Brother”. He shared with us his strength of character, his values, his wisdom, his truth, his humor, his faith.
Matthew worked endlessly and tirelessly, to make the CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities work. He expected nothing less than our best efforts. We never wanted to let him down. He never asked more of us than he was willing to give of himself three or four times over.
He never thought of CCSD and his work at John Jay College as simply his occupation or livelihood. This was his life's work. Matthew McGee will surely be missed by his colleagues, his students and especially by the CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities family.
Matthew, we will miss you.

Please feel free to go to your campus Office of Disability Services or your Counseling Office if you need someone to talk to. They are there to help.
A memorial service is being planned. The details will be posted as soon as they are finalized.

http://www.ny.gov/governor/contact/index.html These bills passed overwhelmingly & would amend state law to require services for NYers WDs are provided in the most integrated community setting, rather than institutional or segregated settings, by requiring agencies to prioritize that in their state plans and to file annual reports demonstrating that priority. This bill remedies that bias by requiring state-funded and/or state-administered programs to:
- provide services in the most integrated setting to an individual's needs
- requires the programs to identify all barriers to community-based services to ensure that an individual is only in an institutionalized, segregated setting if that individual was unable to benefit from a community-based setting.
