Little Theatre for the Deaf Performance and Workshop - Free!!

The Office of Disability Services at Columbia University would like to invite you to the Spring 2009 performance of the National Theatre of the Deaf at Columbia University.

The Office of Disability Services is hosting a daytime performance and evening workshop given by the Little Theatre of the Deaf, the National Theatre of the Deaf's touring children's theater troop. The daytime performance will be a production entitled "Tree Wise" from 12-1 PM. It will be held in Lerner Hall Auditorium - 2920 Broadway at 115th Street. Tree Wise tells the story of a boy who has Deaf parents
and, through the help of a very special tree, the boy learns how to help his friends understand more about Deaf culture.

The evening workshop (6-7:30 PM) will be a lecture and demonstration of performance techniques used by the theater company. This event will be held in Lerner Hall, 5th floor, Satow Room - again at 2920 Broadway at 115th Street.

Both events will be performed in voice and American Sign Language, and are free and open to the public. Children are encouraged to attend the afternoon performance. Both venues are wheelchair accessible.

To guarantee seating of large groups or to inquire about the event, please contact the Office of Disability Services at disability@columbia.edu or 212.854.2388.

Reading Rights Coalition,-protests disabled text to speech on Kindle 2

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Over the past few weeks, I have been organizing with colleagues from around the country to ensure that Amazon's Kindle 2 is accessible to people with print disabilities. (I am a founding member of one organization (Assn on Higher Education and Disability) and president of another (International Dyslexia Association-NY Branch). The Reading Rights Coalition is engaged in a campaign to obtain access for the blind and others with print disabilities to e-books available for Amazon’s new Kindle 2 e-book reader. The new reader, which Amazon is working to make fully accessible, has the ability to use text-to-speech to read these e-books aloud; but under pressure from the Authors Guild, Amazon has announced that authors and publishers will be allowed to disable the text-to-speech function.

This is very unfortunate because Text-To-Speech opens the world of books, magazines, newspapers, and other print media to children and adults with disabilities such as vision impairments, learning disabilities, paralysis, traumatic and other brain injuries. Current alternatives, such as Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic cannot meet the need because that technology is far too limited in selection and timeliness of production. Technologically, once text has been digitized, it’s digitized. The reader’s choice of media format (print image or audio) is merely a matter of display option – not a different product.

Over 25 organizations have joined to form the Reading Rights Coalition, which has set up an on-line petition to urge the Authors Guild and Amazon to reverse course. Visit www.readingrights.org to learn more about our work and see our Open Letter to Authors. We’ve scheduled an informational picket in front of the Authors’ Guild, 31 East 32nd Street in Manhattan, next Tuesday, April 7th from 12:00 to 2:00 pm.

Please read and sign our petition here: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/We-Want-To-Read

Please note: If you are using screen access technology, the first three fields on the form to sign the petition may not be announced. They are, in order: (1) a drop-down menu from which to select your prefix (Mr., Mrs., etc.); (2) an edit field for your first name, and (3) an edit field for your last name. The rest of the fields should announce themselves as you tab to them.

We hope you can join us. In the meantime, join the Reading Rights Coalition Group, http://www.facebook.com/photos.php?id=67290717289#/pages/Reading-Rights-Coalition/67290717289?ref=mf .

Then sign the petition site http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/We-Want-To-Read, and forward to everyone in your network.

5TH ANNUAL MENTAL HEALTH FILM FESTIVAL

On Saturday April 25th Community Access and the New York Association of
Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services will sponsor the Fifth Annual New York
City Mental Health Film Festival at St. Francis College, 182 Remsen Street
Beginning at Noon, last film at 4pm. Tickets are $5 dollars in advance,
$7 at the door. Call Carla at 212-780-1400 Ext 7726 to reserve a seat.

The theme this year is stomping out stigma. We have selected four films.
1. 12:00 pm. Smoke Alarm
2. 12:30 pm. Our feature film "Stop pointing" is a full length film. This film is compromised of 6 people telling their stories on fighting stigma, from our relatives, our potential employers and society at large.
3. 1:00 pm. The "crazy enough to care." This is the true story of a father who battled manic depression for 10 years. He fought the stigma that he was unable to be productive. He started a non profit that travels to psychiatric wards, hospitals and nursing homes to spread love through music and comedy.
4. 1:30 pm. Discussion and Lunch.
5. 4:00 pm. Our last film is "Open Space". Open space is a documentary about 4 people you would not assume to be mental health recipients who find ways to cope with their psychiatric disabilities. The movie ends with a surprise, revealing someone you never would suspect is a mental health recipient.

You have to check out our website.

Discussion will be led by Carlton Whitmore and two of the four films
